Willmar City Council Candidates

Greetings Willmar Voters

With the upcoming election for city council we can make positive changes to the way this city is managed.

This blog is focused on making change that will help get our city back on track with elected officials that have the citizens first when it comes to our city.

More discussion to follow.

After last nights council meeting I thought the mayor was going to need a time-out again when Dave B asked the flood question, way to go Dave.

I wounder how many citizens of Willmar it will take in order to get this council to move and fix the flooding.

I thought the editorial in todays (8/6/08) WC Tribune was very good. They seem to get the fact that we have no leadership steering the City of Willmar. Unfortunately to get anything done we need councilmembers like Ron Christianson, Bruce Deblieck, Jim Dokken and Rick Fagerlie to step up and start introducing some resolutions to get the ball rolling. We have $250K per year available. A 20 year bond should be able to buy about $ 4,500,000 today for starting work on adding a second pipe underground Kennedy and some of the other items on our 7 point list.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the citizens of Willmar to vent their frustrations and concerns about the government and it's policies. I also hope to have a blog started up within the next couple weeks, that will deal mainly with items of concern that our city is not doing that they are supposed to be doing. They need to be shook up.

Willmar is ready for a change. The Citizens of Willmar deserve a City that can be honest with its citizens. Openly discuss the difficult issues. As a group and being a vocal group we can get things changed!

As many of you know the corner of 10th & Kandiyohi recieved damage from last thursday's flooding. because the city welded the manhole covers shut, the water had no where else to go as it was backing up and blew a hole in the street. today at approx. 12:15 pm, city crews came out and laid a bunch of tar over the damaged street surface, ran over it with to make it flat and were gone in about 15 minutes. Very curious. do we know if there was damage beneath the road? if there was and it's not fixed, are we to assume the next time it backs up it will stay under the road or go where??? I'm not an engineer, however, I think I would have dug it up a little to see exactly what was going on. comments?

Ward 2 candidate Robert C Skor seems to me to be a prime candidate to replace Steve Gardner. He is a working man that does not run a business so he will not be affected by pressure from making decisions that would cause him the fear of loosing business deals over. He can truly represent the ward the way it should be. He can also relate to all of us that are trying to make ends meet. He has told me that he has no ambitions of being on the council for a term and then running for a legislative seat or trying to be come a district judge or some other elected office. He was born and raised here in Willmar and I think he is tired of watch the city he was raised in being run by incompetents.

Any thoughts on Tim Johnson vs Skor. I thought Johnson did a very good job researching and presenting issues when it came to Westwind Estates. But what about other issues. Just trying to figure out which sign to get for my front yard

Hi, I can't beleive more hasnt been done on this issue. I'm hoping that they don't feel that this issue will just go away. My question is are we not represented by a county commissioner also? Why can't Mr Larson speak up on this issue? He represents the taxpayers of this area.Maybe some imput by the Commissioner would help in resolving this issue.
I beleive the citzens of Willmar has not been represented by the commissioner. That's why I have chosen to run for County Commissioner. Its time for a new voice in the 2nd District. I'm Paul Hoffer vote Sept. 9th. If you have any questions of me, I can be reached at W 354-2251 or 320-295-6086 or at pkhoffer@hotmail.com

I'm not sure we need anymore attorneys on the council. I still like a candidate that does not have to worry about business relations and therefore can vote without fear of loosing business. Will Mr Johnson be using the council seat to be his next step in his political office run?

Paul I believe you would make a great representative of the people.

What is unbelieveable to me is how people are hanging Gardner over one issue. Tell me what has Christianson done to fix the flooding issue in his ward, after all he has been there far longer! It was Gardner along with Dokken that called for a special meeting of the council to bring ideas about how to deal with the flooding. Only Gardner and Dokken came with ideas and Christianson viewed it as a waste of time.

I wish people would go back and look at the history of Westwinds. It was Christianson and 6 others who voted to have the project orginally planned for the east side of Willmar, to be moved to the Westwinds site! Gardner opposed it!!

People complain about Gardner expressing his moral beliefs when voting on Westwinds, yet these same "Righteous Ones" turn a blinds eye when Christianson does the exact same thing!

We need a change on the Council, but changing Gardner is NOT the answer, he is the only one in Ward 2 actually seeking solutions for issues! Replace Christianson and The Mayor the next election, and God help us if Christianson runs for Mayor!

Anonymous, your loyal support for Councilman Gardner shines through. That's why this is a great country you may have your opinions and we all have our own individual opinions. God Bless America and the Constitution!

P.S. Why are you anonymous?

Citizens of Willmar, please remember that you ALL have a voice and need to let your elected officials know your concerns. Attend meetings, Ask questions, DEMAND ANSWERS.....Not just silence because that is convenient (ie: easy) for our elected officials.

daveb there seems to be others who are also posting as anonymous that are supporting other candidates, why are you not questioning them?

p.s. I am not a Google/Blogger so I don't have an identity seems that clicking anonymous is the most likely option

For the anonymous person wanting to keep Gardner in, and Christianson out; I do believe there was a meeting where Gardner and Christianson were in agreement with the flooding issues. They both wanted to look into rain gardens. I knwo thay also talked about swapping lots with Jorgensen's. I know the city may fear "gifting" in that situation, but it would solve two problems. Jorgensen's maybe wouldn't sue the city, and the city could use their lot to help solve the flooding problems. It seems Christianson doesn't like to waste anymore time and money. If there's a solution out there, wouldn't it be in the best interest to take care of it as soon as possible. Maybe I missed a meeting where they found that rain gardens and swapping lots would not work.
As far as Gardner's beliefs; I applaud anyone that has the courage to say they're a Christian in a public setting and also want to help people. I have no problem with Gardner wanting to help people in the flooded areas or helping people that may need housing. What I do have a problem with, is that (as far as low income housing goes) he won't look at any other options. He won't acknowledge that there could be a better solution out there. I know many, including myself that tried to talk to him about Westwind, and he did not want to discuss it, except that he hoped people could change their minds. I could go on, but Westwind is a done deal. Looks like they're going to get started over there. Hopefully the council can find a solution to the flooding soon.
